Kakao suspends carpool app in response to taxi protests
Kakao Corporation is putting its car-sharing app on ice ((계획등)~을 일시 보류하다, ~을 연기하다, ~을 정지시켜놓다) for the time being (당분간) due to the massive (대량의, 대규모의) backlash (반발) it sparked (촉발시키다, 유발시키다) among cab drivers.
The Korean internet giant decided to suspend the project starting 2pm Friday local time, while it negotiates with the taxi industry and a special task force the Democratic Party has been hoping to create.
The parliament's ruling bloc wants to set up a team consisting of the heads of major taxi organizations, but the industry refused (거부하다) to cooperate (협조하다, 협력하다), demanding the car-pool service be stopped first.
Now that their demands are met, the cab sector is asked to join in, work together and find a compromise.
